Riding the Tides with Windchill

After a brief reprieve, the cold was back, sinking to minus fifty-five wind chills at night and spiking our concern that Windchill’s system was unable to bear it. His daily care routine continued to consist of pain meds, antibiotics, fluids, hay, and regular bed turns. The lifts assisted his circulation, a great help in this cold. Now that he was standing, the vet checked if his lungs were clear. So far so good.

He continued to occasionally ignore us when we lowered the lift. Lying around for twenty-three hours a day, it was no wonder he tried to stay up as long as possible. Walker slept in the corner of Windchill’s stall almost every night. Those two hung out most of the day, whenever Walker wasn’t chasing the two-year-olds in the north pasture. He had decided his role was to annoy Windchill back to health by constantly licking him. Since Windchill responded by extending his legs to push him away, it actually did result in excellent physical rehab. But we didn’t tell Walker that he was good for Windchill. He was already long on attitude, short on humility, and emerging as a worldwide sensation.
